Carsington Sailing Club welcomed 11 Vareo sailors to the first event of the Fat Face Racing Circuit on Saturday 9th April - with a Force 5 gusting 6 and with temperatures that made the Northerners feel particularly at home. Martin Barrett�s �safety first� approach of foregoing the gybes (some would say �chickening out�!) paid off as he was almost always first across the finishing line, hotly pursued by Nick Crickmore and Paul Craft. Few managed to avoid capsizing and several gear breakages allowed some to go ashore for an early hot shower. Nick, however, was enjoying the conditions so much that he completed an extra lap in Race 2! The water was shared with a large fleet of RS 200�s and rounding our leeward mark to see forty 200�s in line astern, flying downwind towards us, was a distinctly worrying experience � right of way or not. One 200 demonstrated his knitting skills by neatly threading his spinnaker pole through a Vareo mainsheet.
Sunday brought an increase in the temperature and a reduction in wind strength which gave some excellent tactical racing. In Race 5 Nick was one of the few to spot the port bias of the start line enabling him to hold off Martin to beat him by inches at the finish.
Gavin Steven (Ripon SC) was awarded the Merit Prize for battling on in the difficult weather despite this being his first Open Meeting.
